Shot Stats Challenger performance meter tracks your tennis racket

shotstatschallenger Thanks in large part to crowd-funding sites like Kickstarter, the number of performance watches and monitors available has exploded in recent years. It seems that every new week brings a new sports monitor. The latest to catch our attention is the simply named Shot Stats Challenger. This monitor clips onto a tennis racket, tracking swing metrics.

Atlanta-based Shot Stats LLC was founded last year by Lavie Sak, a lifelong tennis player and certified coach, and engineer Sergey Feingold. Since then, they’ve been developing tennis tracker prototypes and moving toward market launch.

When snapped onto the strings of a tennis racket, the Shots Stats Challenger plays both physical and smart roles. It serves as a vibration dampener, while using its accelerometer and gyroscope sensor set to measure and store tennis stats. The device measures time on the court, racket head speed at time of ball impact, the number and types of shots taken, the type and amount of spin on the ball, impact points on the racket, and number of shots between re-stringings.

The Challenger design includes a small, high-contrast touchscreen for viewing and swiping through stats. It is also Bluetooth-equipped, connecting with smart devices to export the data for more in-depth analysis. You can study specific sessions to get insight into your game and track your performance over time. You can also overlay stats onto slow-motion video using the in-app camera. By setting specific goals, the Challenger can provide audio alerts during play, letting you know when your game is off the mark.

No sports monitor is complete without a social component, and the Challenger doesn’t miss this point. It allows you to connect with a community of tennis players to share information, compare stats and set up matches.

Currently, the measurement set does not include ball speed. Shot Stats is looking at the possibility of offering this as an extrapolation of racket data. It does not anticipate having this function at launch but is investigating it for possible release as a future update. Shot Stats also plans to offer an open API for developers to design new applications around.

Challenger designers have reached out to the Kickstarter community in an effort to finish product development and begin production. They’re aiming to raise US$75,000, with hopes of beginning production by the end of the year. Pledges of $125 and up secure one of the first units, with estimated delivery in January.

If and when it hits the market, it will compete with devices like the Babolat connected racket and Zepp Labs swing analyzer.

Because the Challenger design is not finalized, it doesn’t have a listed weight. Shot Stats says it is aiming to keep it within the weight of two to three standard vibration dampeners. The current impact-resistant design uses an aluminum housing and shockproof screen designed to hold up to use on the court. Challenger designers say that it can handle direct ball hits and stay firmly clamped to the racket until you physically remove it. Testing of its durability is ongoing. The device has a LiPo battery that provides up to four hours of tracking.

Beyond the tennis tracker, Shot Stats may also look to apply the platform to other sports, such as golf, squash and baseball, in the future.

Tennis Playground – Holiday Villa Club Subang

Got invited recently to play at this private club located at Subang Jaya, Selangor. This is a members only club & it is attached to the Holiday Villa Hotel in Subang Jaya. Club membership can be had for around RM2000 to RM3000 if you buy from members who are selling off their membership. Monthly membership fees are RM77 & members can bring in one guest for free.

There are 2 new carpet courts & 4 newly resurfaced hard court here at the time of this posting. Courts condition are great but the lighting is not so good. I would rate the courts here 8 out of 10 & probably higher if they have better night lighting. Balls & shoe insole will last longer on the carpet courts as they are softer & doesnt bite as much as hard courts. Those who are used to hard courts, you will enjoy the softness of the carpet surface but will hate the ball behaviour & bounce. Overall this club is great because of the various other facillities like gym, pool, squash, sauna, badminton, etc. There are ample parking space, the tennis courts are quiet & there are no traffic disturbance because it is elevated above the hotel building. There are very few tennis playing members here at this club so if you plan on joining, be prepared to play with the wall… LoL!

Croatia’s Donna Vekic captured her first Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Tour singles title at the BMW Malaysian Open at the Royal Selangor Golf Club (RSGC) in Kuala Lumpur today.

The seventh seed however, blew it in the third set before edging World No. 10 and top seed Dominika Cibulkova 5-7, 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) in the rain-interrupted final, which lasted more than two hours. It was also her first ever win over a top 10 player. She earned a prize purse of US$43,000 for her efforts while Dominika received US$21,400.

“It was a tough match, she played very well. I was 5-1 up in the third set but she played insanely well to get back. The fans here really helped, so this win is for them as well.”

A finalist in Tashkent (2013) and Birmingham (2013), Donna had a healthy 5-1 lead in the third set and should have served out the match. However, Dominika clawed back into the match to level at 5-5.

However, the World No 95 Donna kept her nerves to win the title in a tiebreak. Donna started well in the first set as she broke Dominika’s serve for a 3-2 lead. However, the match stopped due to rain when Dominika was on serve at 15-30.

When play resumed, Donna made errors on court, allowing Dominika to break back in the eighth game to level at 4-4. However, the first set went to Dominika after she broke Donna’s serve in the 12th game.

Hungary’s Timea Babos and Taiwan’s Chan Hao Ching won their first Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Tour doubles title as a team in the BMW Malaysian Open at Royal Selangor Golf Club (RSGC) in Kuala Lumpur today.

The top seeds defeated fourth seed Zheng Saisai of China and Taiwan’s Chan Yung Jan 6-3, 6-4 in the rain-delayed final, which lasted for 71 minutes. It was Timea’s first doubles title of the season since victory in Sydney with Lucie Safarova in January. As for Hao Ching, the win in KL is her third career title.

Today’s triumph also meant that Hao Ching got the better of her older sister, Yung Jan, for the second time in a final following victory in the mixed doubles gold medal match at last year’s East Asian Games. Yung Jan could have been the first player in the BMW Malaysian Open to win a second title after winning the doubles event with China’s Zheng Jie in 2010.

The champions earned US$12,300 and 280 ranking points for their efforts while Zheng Saisai-Yung Jan received US$6,400. In an error-prone first set, both pairs broke each other in the opening four games before Timea- Hao Ching earned a decisive break point in the eighth game to win in 35 minutes.
